Our People

Laura Hansplant, RLA, ASLA, LEED AP

Principal + Director of Design

Laura joined Roofmeadow in 2012 as Director of Design, bringing her passion for sustainable landscapes that inspire, educate and promote wellbeing. Laura’s passion for landscapes that work as living systems evolved during her 15 years of designing elegant, sustainable landscapes with Andropogon Associates, where she worked on prestigious projects such as Sidwell Friends Middle School and the Phipps Conservatory’s Center for Sustainable Landscapes. Laura integrates social spaces, rainwater systems and plant communities to create meaningful places where each element serves to mutually support the whole site. Outside the office, Laura pursues interests in soil ecology, meadow dynamics, and art. She spends many afternoons documenting the natural patterns of meadows and woodlands, searching for inspiration for her designs. In her home garden, Laura grows native plants, taking note of their character and durability. Born in Canada, Laura studied at the University of Toronto and the Pennsylvania State University, where she received a Masters in Landscape Architecture with a minor in ecology. She volunteers with the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, where she advocates for sustainable development practices in the Delaware Valley. Laura has developed workshops on planting design, sustainable planning, and the SITES rating system for regional and national audiences. When she can get away, Laura enjoys wilderness canoeing, camping, and hiking with her family.

Charlie Miller, P.E.

Founding Principal

CM_montage_website

Charlie formed Roofscapes, now Roofmeadow, in 1997 to introduce green roof technology for urban stormwater management to the United States. A technical expert in the field, he continues heading the firm, leading our constant exploration of new and better green roofing designs and strategies. His commitment to do good and his intellectual curiosity inspires every aspect of our business. In addition to spearheading all of the firm’s research and design initiatives and authoring multiple technical white papers, Charlie participates directly on the advisory committee for the Center for Green Roof Research at Penn State. As a member of the ASTM Green Roof Task Force (E60.01.71), Charlie has authored four of the six published ASTM green roof standard methods. Charlie’s interest and experience in water resources and environmental engineering began in the 1980’s when he focused his attention on best management practices (BMPs) for water resource management, including biofiltration systems, integrated landscape measures and constructed wetlands. Charlie earned his Master of Science in Civil Engineering and his Master of Science in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Utah; he also earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the College of William & Mary. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife Lyndall.

Andrew Pirie, RLA

Senior Landscape Architect

Andrew joined Roofmeadow in 2015 as Associate Landscape Architect. His prior experience in New England and Philadelphia includes urban streetscape, green roofs, residential landscapes, schoolyards, playgrounds, and zoological gardens. Andrew takes an experience-based approach to designing with plants and soils. In particular he’s interested in the question of how to manage landscapes in ways that promote healthy soils and diverse plant communities over a long period of time. One of Roofmeadow’s unique strengths is that it pursues this question scientifically. In Andrew’s spare time, he raises a variety of perennials and woody plants, including fruit trees and many of our native shrubs. While Andrew’s enemies are few, they are formidable; he has been in a pitched battle with the invasive weeds multiflora rose and Canada thistle for more than a decade. Andrew is a Registered Landscape Architect in Pennsylvania, and received a Masters Degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania in 2011. His undergraduate degree is from Amherst College. Besides plants, he enjoys drawing, running, raising chickens and New Wave music.

Landscape Architect

Brittany joined Roofmeadow in January 2020. Her project experience includes public parks, civic landscapes, multimodal trails, campus master planning, playgrounds, and green stormwater infrastructure. Her involvement on projects with multiple stakeholders, strict project requirements, and tight budget constraints helps her build design consensus among multiple parties in every project. Brittany’s background in engineering, architecture, and planning help her bring a collaborative focus to project coordination and documentation. Brittany is a registered landscape architect in Pennsylvania and received a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 2013. Outside the office, Brittany enjoys her small urban garden and exploring the many wonderful public spaces throughout Philadelphia.

Angela Fleegle

Landscape Designer + Stewardship Director

Angela joined Roofmeadow in March 2018. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Temple University and brings with her an extensive background in planting design, native plant ecology, green roof stewardship, and project management. She is passionate about taking an integrative and ecological approach to all her design challenges, as she believes that everything is connected. During her prior work experience with a local green roof installation company, she started an initiative in cooperation with the Pollinator Project to integrate native wildflowers on a few Sedum-only, extensive green roofs to introduce more food sources for urban pollinators throughout the growing season. Past volunteer experiences include a project for the Community Design Collaborative and presenting special green roof lectures at her alma mater. When not immersed in the plant world, she loves hiking, dancing, and music (she has been known to perform with a few local bands in the past).
