Landscape Architect (5-8 Years of Experience)

Roofmeadow is an award-winning design studio that pioneers solutions at the intersection of landscape architecture, engineering, and horticulture.  We create unique opportunities for distinctive place-making for on-ground sites and elevated landscapes.  Specialty design and technical support for elevated landscapes is a significant element of our work.

The ideal candidate has 5-8 years of office experience and demonstrates a strong working knowledge of the design and construction documentation processes. Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited program.
  • Experience and passion for creating innovative, sustainable landscapes that advance best practices in inclusive design, rainwater management, planting and materials systems.
  • Proficiency in the use of Adobe Creative Suites, CAD, and SketchUp. Facility with 3-D modeling is required.
  • Proficiency in written and graphic communications skills to communicate design ideas.
  • Proficiency with oral presentation skills and facilitating constructive discussion with client groups.
  • Interest in specialty design for elevated landscapes (i.e. green roofs).
  • Interest in multi-disciplinary collaborations (e.g., with civil engineers, construction specialists, and policy specialists) from project concept through project stewardship.
  • Secondary expertise in a related field – graphic design, engineering, photography, carpentry, ecology, or similar – is valued.
  • Comfort level with reviewing and summarizing technical literature in support of detail design is required.
  • Familiarity with rating systems for sustainable design (LEED, SITES, LBC) is required.

Position Responsibilities

  • Manage landscape architectural projects (at grade and on structure) through all phases, including collaboration with design colleagues, clients and subconsultants. Coordinate the design documentation through appropriate use of design software tools.
  • Develop and foster positive client relationships, with the goal of client satisfaction and interest in future collaborations.
  • Facilitate discussion of in-progress designs during conference calls and project meetings.
  • Demonstrate expertise in design development, advancing technical considerations such as green stormwater infrastructure, green roof technical detailing, grading design, irrigation design, specification writing under the supervision of the senior designer.
  • Coordinate 3D modeling studies (SketchUp) and 2D graphics studies (Adobe Creative Suites, CAD) to nimbly explore and communicate design concepts.
  • Coordinate construction drawing production. This position requires active production time in combination with organizing production work by colleagues.
  • Demonstrate horticultural experience as a foundation for planting design, building on an existing working knowledge of plants and growing conditions.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of landscape materials and construction techniques.
  • Review product submittals.
  • Perform construction observation of field conditions and prepare associated field reports.

This position is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position with health benefits. The annual salary shall be commensurate with experience.

Roofmeadow is a twenty-year old, entrepreneurial-minded design studio, focusing on innovative designs for outdoor spaces that blend landscape architecture and civil engineering.  Based in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, our office environment is open, collaborative, energetic, and dynamic. Our values reflect our triple bottom line commitment. Our site design portfolio includes institutional, academic, and mix-used development projects. We occasionally work with selected contractor partners in a  design-assist capacity.  All Roofmeadow design staff benefit from on-site construction phase experience in addition to in-office project development.
